Young students lend a hand through Aquila Service Club

Aquila Service Club began in early spring of 2007 with the vision of providing an authentic service learning experience for first through third grade students. What better way to teach the International Baccelaurete (IB) attitudes and profiles and build Developmental Assets while exposing them to a more worldly way of life and instilling lifelong values?

Asset Champion Jen Beeman, a teacher at Aquila, organized the service club. With 15 students, the club met six times throughout the spring. The participants worked on projects ranging from cleaning up Aquila’s campus for Earth Day to helping the Aquila Neighborhood Association advertise their annual neighborhood walk.

During the 2007-2008 academic year the Service Club grew from 15 to 40! They met from early winter through the end of the school year and completed many amazing projects. Their projects include making things for and spending time at Golden Hills Living Center once per month, organizing and successfully carrying out a school supply drive for an orphanage in Honduras, and helping Aquila prepare for its 50th Birthday celebration.

In July, Summer Sparks (Community Education) offered a weeklong opportunity for students to experience service in their community. The summer group worked at STEP, helped the Animal Humane Society, made items for Golden Hills, and assisted the Kid’s Place preschool.

The members of the Service Club have grown tremendously through being part of and reflecting on their projects.
