With regard to Children First….what a FUN time this was to work with others in the community (adults and kids) and putting together special events to help launch the initiative. The challenges were to overcome the objection that “I don’t have time for doing another ‘program’….the FUN was helping people (and businesses) realize that Children First was more of a way to act/philosophy versus a special ‘program’.
Some of my favorite memories were really engaging in the initiative, personally, and back at my company at the time, Park National Bank. One tangible thing that happened was establishing a Random Acts of Kindness Fund at St. Louis Park Junior High — establishing a fund for kids who didn’t have money for a pair of gym shoes…or couldn’t pay for a field trip…or any other incidental item. We learned so much about the needs of kids – versus just sending in money to a general school fund. I am proud to think that this fund made a difference for even one child/student.
